At Westminster, Christian life is represented not simply by the abstract beliefs of a select group of people but as an integral part of the day-to-day experience for many students, faculty, and staff. From weekly Friday Morning Fellowships to student-led small groups, retreats, and assemblies, Westminster offers numerous opportunities to engage with the Christian faith, whether you are a believer or not. These activities foster a sense of community and purpose while helping students grow spiritually and intellectually.
Perhaps the cornerstone of Christian activity at Westminster is the Friday Morning Fellowships. Held weekly, these gatherings unite the Christian community together while also welcoming friends of different faiths for a time of student-led worship and reflection.
As dedicated Christian Life Council member Anthony He said, “It is valuable to be a part of a Christian community that is separate from what [you] see at church.”
Being involved in Christian life at Westminster is not an extension of church activities; rather, it is a unique way to connect with different friends in a faith many of us share. The services feature a mix of student speakers and talented musicians, each bringing their unique perspectives on faith, leadership, and service. The energy during these services is incredible, so if you want to start your engagement in Westminster Christian life, FMFs are the place to start. Following worship, there are weekly student speeches on various topics, whether it be one sharing their faith story or helping people find purpose as dictated by Jesus in the Bible. In this space, students are encouraged to reflect on how their faith intersects with their everyday experiences. These fellowships serve as a touchpoint in the week, reminding students and staff alike of the broader Christian mission that undergirds the Westminster experience. The emphasis on inclusivity and relevance makes it an uplifting time for the entire community.
Along with weekly fellowships, Westminster students gather for a monthly First Tuesday meeting, a special time of fellowship held at a student’s home. This informal gathering provides a relaxed setting for students to connect outside the typical school environment. The evening usually includes shared meals, worship, and open discussions about faith and life, often led by a student. These gatherings create a space where students can build deeper relationships, share their faith journeys, and encourage one another in a welcoming, supportive atmosphere. It’s a refreshing time of community and spiritual growth.
A highlight of Westminster Christian life is the retreats, where students escape the routine of school for a weekend of fellowship and spiritual renewal. Personally, after attending my first retreat this fall, I realized that the weekend changed my life profoundly: for the first time, I could connect with a group of believers. This instance helped me draw closer to God and find joy in being a part of a community that shares my beliefs. These retreats are packed with exciting activities like team-building games, outdoor adventures, and lively worship sessions. Alongside the fun, students participate in small group discussions and hear inspiring talks that challenge and encourage them in their faith. The combination of relaxation, deep conversations, and shared experiences creates lasting memories and strengthens bonds within the Westminster community. These retreats are not only a chance to grow spiritually but also to build meaningful friendships.
Christian life at Westminster is more than a collection of activities or events; it’s a way to experience religion in a setting that we spend so much time in. Through fellowships, discussions, worship sessions, retreats, and so much more, students can express their love for Jesus and have opportunities to live out their faith at Westminster. In doing so, they not only deepen their own spiritual journey but also contribute to a culture of service, compassion, and integrity that reflects the core values of the Christian faith. This vibrant, active approach to Christian life helps students at Westminster discover what it means to live with purpose, guided by faith.
If you want to get involved in Christian life, a great place to start is by attending Friday Morning Fellowship, at 8 AM in the chapel on the third floor Barge, with a few friends.
“Be open-minded,” says Anthony, and you will definitely have a great time.
